So, looks like they found planets with exceptionally fast orbits (~10 days) around dwarf stars similar to ours. Of course, Sal is pretty far from being a dwarf star yet, but meh.
I’m really unsure what mapping the galaxy is really accomplishing in terms of pragmatic terms. Sure, it’s interesting, but when Stephen Hawking belches out some crap about black holes which he later retracts it makes you wonder if this money is really worth it.
Mapping the genome is one thing, because it has an end. Also, it has very pragmatic purposes (though, of course, biotech companies are patenting the human genome–$250,000 to reserach MY genome plz!). I would be more upset about it, but NASA is already on the bottom of the funded government agencies. I feel they should be made more accountable for sending billion dollar objects into the completely wrong direction, but meh.
Science and health is what makes America number one I suppose. We’ve lost manufacturing and generally other aspects. But hey, you may sell us a $30,000 car Japan, but we’ll sell you the cure for your life… and missiles BIG ONES ^_^
P.S. Here’s ome nice YTMNDs about the recent Hubbel pictures: A Tiny Glimpse. Sure makes you feel significant…
